Saturday 6/15: The river level was a very fishable sub-350 cfs. Normally I may consider that as “almost unfishable”, but not this year. At that flow careful wading is possible. Much of the stream is accesable, but caution and a wading staff are ever present in my mind and on my belt. The water temp at 7:30am was 58.6 after a chilly night. Water clarity was dirty, but not muddy. If gin clear is 100%, and chocolate milk muddy is 0% visibility,Saturday am was probably about 40% clear. That’s assuming my 5th grade math and 60 something year old eyes are on the same page. It was certainly clear enough to swing a LaFontaine. I managed 3 decent rainbows and a little smallie and was back mowing the lawn by 10:00. An unfortunate incident with my fertilizer spreader later on had me making a run for a replacement at about 2:00. The club is directly (ok, almost) in line between my home and the P’burg Home Depot. Convenient. So I jumped back in for another couple hours, the lawn can wait. The water temp was up to 63.3. The level seemed a little better and clarity was much cleaner. Using that 40% clarity benchmark, it looked like it had cleared considerably to maybe 20%. I fished for another 90 minutes and netted a couple, lost a couple more on BHPtails and a caddis emerger in the film. It was nice to finally fish some clear water and actually catch one on the surface for a change. Hopefully we don’t get blown up this week, but forecasts aren’t great. Get out while you can.

Anthony, Thanks for that encouraging report. I’m out of town this week or otherwise would be taking advantage of the relatively benign river conditions. I last fished on Monday, June 10, and also got into a few fish, landing some but getting a lot of bumps without hookups. The river had dropped to a fishable 320 cfs, but more rain was predicted, so I figured I better get out before it all went south again. Apparently other guys had the same idea, because when I arrived at the Asbury section at 10:30 I found three vehicles in the parking area. So I headed downstream to Warren Glen, which I had to myself. Wading and water clarity were marginal but okay. I swung woolly buggers and nymphs. Like you on Memorial Day, I found the fish hit with the fly dangling at the end of the swing but not on the swing itself. Yesterday we arrived on Martha’s Vineyard for our annual week here. I went out to the beach last evening and fished for half an hour with a small Clouser minnow and caught 3 scup (think saltwater bluegills, but bigger) and a striper; if I said the striper was 12 inches long I’d be exaggerating. — Jim Merritt

I missed this last week. As always thanks for the update Anthony. After stocking yesterday Mike Leta and I stuck around and did some fishing. We started at the Warren Glen stretch then moved over to Asbury. Picked fish everywhere with great flow but a bit stained. Asbury seemed to be a bit clearer. Handful of fish fell for a Tungsten jig Nymph with some resemblance to a PT with the exception of a collar of UV ice dub in a shrimp/orange color. Hit Beatty’s in the evening and with no rising fish swung a heavy Golden Retriever and found a couple large, hungry guys. Taping out at 17” and 19”….. Was worth the walk! Looks like level shot up to close to 600 but I believe it should retreat quick. Cab’t Wait to get back out there! Tight lines Gents….

Hoping to fish this weekend. Is the algea bloom in Lake Hopatcong going to impact the fishing?

    Thanks – Gerald

Gerald, I don’t believe there should be any adverse effects from the lake algae. I would say levels are still above normal flows and will most likely still be off color so plan accordingly. Best of luck!
