Got out of work yesterday with no intentions of fishing, in less than favorable conditions. Hot, humid with threats of severe weather. By the time I got home those thoughts changed! Couple quick things to take care of at home and made a B-line for the “promised Land”. Checked the radar and it looked like I had about a 2 hour window, well that window shrunk a bit but I managed some quality time, and boy do I mean quality. Not sure what fired these fish off yesterday, possibly the front moving in, the drop and clearing water, the moons in alignment…… LOL, to be quite honest I could care less they had the FEED BAG on! From the onset fish took offerings including Nymphs, Buggers, Wooly Worms thanks “Mike Price”, Zug Bugs. It was one of those days where I think you could of tossed a bare hook. In that short hour and a half I was able to bring 11 to hand and dropped at least 4 due to some short strikes on the Buggers. Only one Brown but some sizeable Bows to round out the catch, and they were charged up! Best afternoon I’ve had to date. Wish I would of got a water temp but forgot my thermometer, water still quite cool for July standards. As I stated before I was cut short by a pretty serious storm cell that brought lots of lightning and torrential rain. Doesn’t appear to have effected the flow as I see we’re running at just 273 CFS as I write this. Get out there and catch em up Men.

    Tight Lines as always!

John, Congratulations! These days happen from time to time, and as you note, they aren’t entirely explainable. I fished the day before (Monday, July 1) and had both river sections to myself. I managed 3 rainbows, 1 in Warren Glen and 2 in Asbury, all on a Woolly Bugger (tried nymphs briefly, no takers). Saw no bugs or rising fish. The river was running about 330 and 68-69 degrees, so still on the high side and a little warm. I think you benefited from lower water (finally below 300 cfs) and as you say, maybe from a dropping barometer (although sometimes that can turn fish off). I’m out of town next week and don’t expect to be on the river again until mid-July. Jim Merritt
P.S. Thanks from all of us for your frequent postings.

Jim, on a side note my Son Justin had his first fishing article published this month in On The Water magazine. At 17 years young I’m quite proud of him. Topic was Raritan River Smallmouth fishing from a teen’s perspective.
