Anthony BavaroParticipantFor those who may not be too local to the river to check on conditions- you’re not missing much right now. Levels are wonderfully high for July at 362 cfs this morning, about 50 cfs is overage from Hopatcong. Good for the aquatic insects and fish. The bad news is water temp yesterday around 2:00pm was in the 75 degree range, depending on where I sampled. It’s too warm to C&R; so my rod was left home to avoid temptation. Clarity was about 50% between muddy and gin clear. Recent localized storms probably contributed to the unusual turbidity along with the lake water mix. What is usually July low, clear and terrestrial-buggy instead looks more like a roiled Spring flow….only at 75 degrees. The osprey was working hard searching the shallower seams but it looked like he came up empty every time. So if you’re itchin’ to get out, you may want spend time at the family picnic instead and buy some time until this heat breaks.

Jim MerrittParticipantAnthony, Thanks for your posting. I’ve been out just twice this month, the first time on July 1, when the river was running 325 cfs and 68 degrees, not too bad. Caught 3 RBs, all on Woolly Buggers. The next time was July 16, before the heat bomb, when the river was at 360 cfs and 69 degrees, warm enough to comfortably wade wet. Fishing was dead, although at the end I did manage to hook into a single RB on a mop fly in the Beatty Pools. On both occasions there were no bugs or rising fish. As I write this the river is at 331 cfs and trending north after last night’s storms. I think we will be in this pattern for the rest of the summer. Jim Merritt

John MillerParticipantHaven’t been out since the 15th. Been catching up on some Fluke fishing in the Atlantic. Was actually fortunate enough to fish with a great group of friends in the Grandpa Savino tournament based out of Staten Island Tuna Club, we brought home $9500 placing 3rd overall with 3 fish 18.5 lbs and winning the 2 fish Calcutta at 14.5lbs! What a day. With the cool down I’m hoping to get out Friday if levels drop below 400, fingers crossed.

Anthony BavaroParticipantGlad to hear you guys are getting out and catching some fish. Maybe these cooler nights will help with the river temps for a few days. With the higher levels and lower temps maybe we can squeeze in another outing or two. John- congrats on the fluke tournament! Great job- those are some huge fluke. Any pics?
