The water level is really hanging tough. 4 days now and still no significant drop below 500. What’s everyone’s experience with fishing a high flow on our stretch? I’m usually a big Wooly bugger or Streamer fished deep guy when levels are high. Any other thoughts on tactics?
Hey John:
My experience on the Musky in high water has definitely been better with an olive wholly bugger or a Pats rubber legs in deeper stretches. If the flow is over 300cfs, best bet is no weight, cut your leader back to about 6′ and do some yard work. Then you’ll be ready to go when it drops back to <250 range. Right now on a Saturday morning in April I think your best bet is try the South Branch. It’s high and cold but fish able. Just prepare for the crowds.
I think we’re still getting some extra flow from Hopatcong. I may try tomorrow if the flow drops some.
See ya
Anthony
I fished both sections April 23 with the water running high but clear at 310 cfs and cold at 55 degrees. Lots of apple caddis throughout the day, but no rising fish at all. None of the usually productive places produced, although I did find one little run where I connected with a pair of bead-head nymphs. Now the river is up again with Wednesday’s rain, but it’s just a matter of time before conditions improve. Jim Merritt
