John MillerParticipantBeen quite some time since I’ve posted any reports. I’ll try to keep up with a bi-weekly heads up from here on in. It’s been an interesting Winter for sure. My November started with my annual pilgrimage to the Western NY Tribs chasing big Browns and Steelhead with fellow member Rich Welichko. While Rich was able to come tight every day with a couple, I struggled. Things have certainly changed out there in the past 5 or so years. I guess I should of never left NJ….. The club fished very well all through November and December with the majority of fish being caught sub surface on a variety of Nymphs, although I know some had some success up top specifically on the slower stretches. Beatty’s has been a hit or miss bite this year for me, not sure exactly why but I definitely have not had the steady fishing I’ve had there in previous years. Some highlights I certainly won’t forget was landing a couple massive Rainbows on my 4wt. using a 6X tippet, it has given me some confidence in stepping my leader and tippet sizes down which I genuinely believe gives the fly a much better presentation. Another was getting a call from Mr. Barna along with a picture of an absolutely beautiful colored up Brown which was impressive by itself but he then explained to me he had caught the same fish months prior, that fish has held his ground through warm, low, high and every other condition Mother Nature and us fisherman have handed him. It’s great to know our catch and release is paying off with fish staying local to our waters. To top that I myself caught the now Infamous “Barna Brown” last week. January has brought some harsh temps along with tough weather patterns but I’ve still managed a few fish on every outing. Hope to see all at the Annual Dinner in March, I hear we have a special guest speaker attending! Tight Lines all, see you on the water soon…..

Jim MerrittParticipantJohn, Thanks for that good report. I planned for some winter fishing this year but between the cold and snow have yet to get out. Last time on river was Dec. 31. Totals for the 2021 season: 28 outings, 6 skunkings; 39 fish in 68 hours. Not too bad. Jim Merritt

Anthony BavaroParticipantGood reports John and Jim. Nice to see some forum activity; I was beginning to wonder if anybody was paying attention to our forum anymore. I’m as guilty as any. I’ve been distracted lately and haven’t been in since December, hopefully that’ll change soon. Our only daughter gets married in March in St Augustine after which I look forward to jumping on any SBS or chimarra caddis that may still be hanging around. My logs show March as a productive time for both the small stones as well as the caddis larvae. Unlike Jim, I’m too lazy to tally up my logbook year, but suffice to say 2021 for me often found tough stream conditions due to storms, Hopatcong releases as well as the unusal level of pressure on weekends. I still managed a few size able ‘bows plus a few gorgeous, fat Browns. After Ida deposited a fair amount of sand throughout the runs in September, I’m curious as to how (or if?) it will affect the balance of our aquatic
entomology. Hopefully we have a buggy, productive river year. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the dinner. -
